Hyperpigmentation includes melasma, freckles, sunspots (Solar lentigines), birthmarks and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Some of the causes of hyperpigmentation include overexposure to the Sun, allergies, scars from past injury, inflammatory diseases, aging, reaction towards certain cosmetic products or simply just hereditary.

What are the Types of Pigmentation ?

Freckles
Freckles are small, flat spots on the skin that are usually brown or light tan in color. They typically appear on areas of the body that have been exposed to the sun, such as the face, arms and shoulders. Freckles are caused by an increased level of melanin, a pigment produced by cells in the skin. They are harmless and generally can be treated with picolaser.
Age spots, also known as liver spots, are flat brown, gray, or black spots that appear on the skin. They are caused by years of sun exposure and usually occur in people over the age of 40.
Melasma
Melasma is a skin condition characterized by dark, discoloured patches on the face. It is most commonly seen in women and is caused by an increase in melanin production due to sun exposure, hormones, or other triggers. Treatment options include topical creams and laser therapy.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a skin condition that occurs when an area of the skin becomes darker than its surrounding areas due to inflammation. It can be caused by acne, eczema, burns, and other skin injuries. Treatment usually involves using topical creams or laser therapy to reduce the appearance of discoloration.
Hori’s nevus
Symmetrical grey-brown or blue-grey spots which appear most commonly on the cheek. Sometimes may develop on the forehead, nose, eyelids and temples. This kind of pigmentation is deeper down in the skin’s dermis.
Naevus of Ota
Naevus of Ota is a type of birthmark that typically appears on one side of the face. It is caused by an overgrowth of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. The mark can range in color from light grey to dark brown and can be raised or flat. In some cases, it may also cause vision problems or hearing loss.
